The Atlantic profiles Nuestras Raices, an urban farming program in Holyoke, Massachusetts, a community notorious for poverty, drugs and crime. The program is hailed as a beacon of light in the city, and is one that is growing truly fair food. Decisions are really made by the young people working on the farm, and the vegetables grown there stay in the area.

Design Indaba, a Cape Town-based creative development conference, is working on designing and now building houses in the city's townships for low-income families. The Creative Review has a good overview of their designs and how the implementations are going. The housing designs are low-cost and high-efficiency.
